Seminar Week Spring 2016: Zukunft des Bauens – eine Rundreise
We travel to Switzerland and southern Germany, in search of groundbreaking approaches in the production of buildings. It is the goal to understand technical frameworks and to experience the built reality and today’s opportunities in terms of prefabrication and energy issues.
The starting point of our journey are modern robot-crafted wooden constructions of Gramazio / Kohler and Shigeru Ban in Switzerland. Then, in the Mercedes factories in Stuttgart, we will study the development and production of automobiles and visit the museum of UN Studio. At the Technical University Stuttgart, we will gain insight into the research and buildings of Werner Sobek at the Institut für Leichtbau Entwerfen und Konstruieren (ILEK) and see works by Achim Menges at the Institute for Computational Design. During a visit of the Weissenhofsiedlung and works by Frei Otto, we draw a historical arch to modernism and the tradition of innovation. Near Augsburg we will experience pioneering fabrication techniques for glass (Sedak) and robotics (Kuka). Relating to the current design semester, the seminar week examines innovation in material as well as new jointing techniques, enabling a genuine recycling process.
